What is a Healthcare Homegirl?
A Healthcare Homegirl is the person at Kyndred who stays with you between visits.
Your clinician does the medical work: your history, your labs, your diagnosis, your treatment plan. Your Healthcare Homegirl does the work that usually lands on you once the visit ends. She gets your lab order to a draw site you can actually get to, finds out why the pharmacy is saying they never received your prescription, tracks down the specialist appointment, and answers the question that surfaces on a Tuesday three weeks after your visit.
The role is non-clinical. She does not diagnose, prescribe, or interpret results. Her job is to make sure the plan you made with your clinician holds up in your real life.
Care works better when you have someone in your corner.
Why We Call Her That
In other healthcare settings, you might hear titles like patient navigator, care coordinator, or community health worker. At Kyndred, we call her your Healthcare Homegirl.
We chose Healthcare Homegirl because the name sets the expectation.
A homegirl already knows the situation. You are not starting from the beginning every time you reach out. She will make the call you have been putting off. And she does not need you to soften how tired, frustrated, confused, or over it you are before you ask for help. For many Black women, navigating healthcare has become work of its own: chasing results, calling the pharmacy again, re-explaining your history, finding the specialist, following up on the referral. We built the Healthcare Homegirl because we do not think all of that work should fall on you.
What Your Healthcare Homegirl Does
Labs and imaging. Gets your order where it needs to go, helps you schedule your draw or imaging, tracks results back to your clinician, and lets you know when they land.
Referrals. Connects you to the right specialist in the Kyndred Care Network and sends your context ahead, so you are not retelling your whole story to a stranger.
Prescriptions. Helps get your prescription to a pharmacy that has it and follows up when something stalls.
Scheduling. Helps with booking and rebooking and keeps the sequence of your care on track when life gets in the way.
Resources. Connects you with community programs and support for the things outside the visit that shape your health.
Education. Points you to the Sugar lesson or resource that matches the lab, medication, diagnosis, or decision in front of you, instead of leaving you to search.
Follow-through. Checks in on the goals you set with your clinician, what is working, what is not, and what may need another look before your next visit.
What She Doesn’t Do
Your Healthcare Homegirl is part of your care team, but she is not a clinician. She won't:
Interpret your labs.
⊘
Adjust a medication.
⊘
Diagnose a symptom.
⊘
Make clinical decisions about your care.
⊘
When something needs your clinician, she knows how to get it there. You do not have to figure out who to ask, where to send it, or whether you are bothering someone by asking.
Who Does This Work
Healthcare Homegirls come from community health work, doula care, case management, patient navigation, health education, and other roles built around helping people move through healthcare. They know how the system works, where it tends to break down, and what it can take for Black women to navigate it.
Every Healthcare Homegirl is trained in Kyndred's care model and grounded in the Togather ALI framework, the same anti-racism, liberation, and intersectionality practice our clinicians are trained in. They document in your chart, participate in care team discussions, and carry a defined caseload so they have the time to know your care, not just your name.
Which kinds of care include one
Healthcare Homegirl support is included at no additional cost with the WTF Visit, our care programs, and medication abortion care. If you continue into a Kyndred Care Membership after a care program, your Healthcare Homegirl stays with you there too.
A lot of healthcare happens after the appointment is over. There are labs to complete, prescriptions to pick up, referrals to schedule, questions that come up later, and plans that have to fit into the rest of your life.
That is the space your Healthcare Homegirl fills. She stays with you between visits, helping make sure the care you planned with your clinician does not end when the appointment does.
