Comprehensive Contraceptive Counseling

Birth control care that centers your body, your goals, and your autonomy

Choosing birth control isn’t just a medical decision—it’s a personal one.

At Kyndred, we provide patient-led, judgment-free contraceptive counseling designed to support your health, lifestyle, and reproductive goals without pressure or assumptions.

Whether you’re starting birth control for the first time, reconsidering your current method, or navigating side effects, our clinicians take the time to listen and help you make informed decisions that feel right for you.

Is This You?

If this sounds familiar, this visit is for you.

If you’re feeling unsure, overwhelmed, or over it, that’s okay. This visit is designed to help you sort through your options with someone who actually listens.

  • You want to start birth control and aren’t sure which option fits your body, your schedule, or your values.

  • You’re on a method already (pill, patch, ring, IUD, implant, shot, etc.) but the side effects, bleeding, or mood changes don’t feel right.

  • You’ve been told to “just go on birth control” to fix symptoms like painful periods, acne, or PCOS—and you want a deeper conversation about options.

  • You’re coming off birth control and want support understanding what to expect from your cycle, fertility, or mood.

  • You’re navigating a new season—new partner, no partner, abortion or pregnancy loss, postpartum, perimenopause—and your birth control needs have shifted.

What’s Included

  • A full story-first intake

    A full story-first intake
Your provider listens to your concerns, goals, and lived experience—not just your symptoms. We review your health history, period history, past birth control experiences, and any diagnoses like PCOS, fibroids, endometriosis, PMDD, or migraines.

  • Education on hormonal and non-hormonal options

We walk through methods like pills, patch, ring, shot, implant, IUDs, condoms, diaphragms, spermicide, gels, and fertility awareness methods in clear, non-jargony language.

  • Support navigating side effects or transitions

If you’re dealing with mood shifts, bleeding changes, weight concerns, libido changes, headaches, or acne, we help you understand why they might be happening and what can be adjusted—whether that’s dosage, method, or something else in your care plan.

  • A plan that centers informed consent and autonomy

You’ll leave with a personalized contraception plan that fits your goals now and leaves room for your future ones—whether that’s avoiding pregnancy, preserving future fertility, managing symptoms, or supporting pleasure and comfort.

  • Integrated education through Sugar

Sugar, our digital education platform embedded in your care experience, sends short, culturally grounded lessons and coaching emails so you can revisit what you learned, understand your method, track symptoms, and feel supported between visits.

When needed, your provider may also order labs, adjust medications, or make referrals to the Kyndred Care Network (like GYN, mental health, or dermatology) to make sure your birth control plan fits into your whole health picture.

Birth Control Options We Can Talk Through

We don’t believe in
one-size-fits-all birth control

  • ### Pills

    combined & progestin-only

Daily pills that can help with pregnancy prevention, period regulation, cramps, acne, and more—while also talking honestly about mood, weight, and bleeding changes

  • ### The Patch and Ring

Once-a-week (patch) or once-a-month (ring) methods that offer steady hormones without a daily pill, with room to discuss pros, cons, and how they impact your sex life and routine.

  • ### The Shot

    (Depo Provera)
An every-3-month injection that can be convenient if daily or weekly methods are tough to keep up with, plus a conversation about bone health, weight concerns, and bleeding patterns.

  • ### Implants and IUDs

    (hormonal & non-hormonal)
Long-acting reversible options (like Nexplanon or hormonal and copper IUDs) that can last years and be removed when you’re ready. We’ll talk through insertion, pain management, side effects, and what to expect as a Black woman navigating those procedures.

  • ### Non-hormonal methods

Condoms, internal condoms, diaphragms, cervical caps, gels, and copper IUDs; we also discuss fertility awareness and cycle tracking for those who want to avoid hormones or connect more deeply with their cycles.

  • ### Emergency contraception

Pills and copper IUDs are used after sex to reduce the chance of pregnancy, including which option may be more effective based on timing, body size, and access.

When birth control is part of a bigger picture

If your contraception is tied to PCOS, fibroids, endometriosis, PMDD, abortion care, or pregnancy planning, we’ll make sure your plan also honors your hormonal health, mental health, and long-term goals.

How a Visit Works

Contraceptive counseling is provided through a virtual visit, so you can join from home, work, your car, or wherever you feel most at ease.

  • Before Your Visit

Complete a brief intake form about your health history, periods, prior birth control, and current concerns.

Reflect on your goals: Is your priority pregnancy prevention, symptom relief, skin, mood, bleeding, or something else?

Note any side effects or patterns you’ve noticed—like mood dips around your cycle, heavy bleeding, or headaches.

  • During Your Visit

You’ll meet with a Kyndred clinician who is experienced in Black women’s sexual and reproductive health.

We listen to your story, review your history, and talk through your questions and fears—including past experiences of medical racism, coercion, or not feeling heard.

Together, you explore options, weigh pros and cons, and decide on next steps at a pace that feels grounded—not rushed.

  • After Your Visit

Depending on your preferences and health history, your next steps may include:

Prescriptions sent to your pharmacy. Leave with a care plan tailored to your goals, which may include prescriptions delivered to your home or sent to your preferred pharmacy

Planning for in-person procedures: If you’re considering an IUD or implant, we’ll walk you through the process and connect you to trusted in-person care.

Get continued care and support through follow-up visits, Sugar lessons, coaching emails, and Healthcare Homegirl guidance for referrals, pharmacy, or benefits questions

Good news about the actual birth control

In many cases, the cost of your birth control itself (like pills, patch, ring, or certain IUDs and implants) is fully or mostly covered by insurance—even when your visit with Kyndred is cash pay.

We help you make it make sense

During your visit, your provider and, when applicable, your Healthcare Homegirl can help you understand how to use your benefits for prescriptions, explore lower-cost options, and connect you to pharmacies or programs that reduce out-of-pocket costs.

HSA/FSA-friendly

Many patients are able to use HSA or FSA funds for visit fees and related costs, depending on their plan.

Foward-Thinking Care

If you’re worried about cost, let us know in your intake form. Together, we’ll look for the most affordable, sustainable path to the care and contraception you deserve.

How Birth Control Fits into Kyndred Care

At Kyndred, birth control is one part of a bigger, whole-person picture

  • Race-concordant, culturally responsive care
Our model was built by Black women for Black women, with providers trained in anti-racist, trauma-informed, and pleasure-centered care.

  • Root-cause and symptom relief—not either/or
We honor that birth control can be both a powerful tool and not the whole answer. If your symptoms signal deeper issues (like PCOS, fibroids, PMDD, or metabolic concerns), we can explore further testing or a WTF Visit to get to the root.
